Sid Meier’s Civilization V: Brave New World: Previews of a press version

The promising name of the new addon to Civilization 5 leads to thoughts about references to the immortal work Oldos Huxley. The most naive players may have even managed to skill a separate scenario on the subject of consumption from the anti -utopia “On the marvelous new world”, which in the original is called just Brave New World.

Unfortunately or fortunately, creation Huxley has nothing to do with the next brainchild Firaxis Games. The direction in which we will now develop our civilization, in a sense, contradicts the main idea of ​​consumer anti-utopia. We are talking about the priority of cultural values ​​over the other. Great works of art in a new addition – at the forefront. At least, such an impression is made by the press version of the game, which not so long ago fell into our hands.

Cult, tourism and bodybuilding

The addon is entirely devoted to peaceful development. We are offered to focus on trade, diplomacy and culture. The developers have prepared an updated cultural victory for us. That is, even more cultural and even, we are not afraid of this word, cultural and tourist.

To prevail over rivals, you need to achieve a cultural influence on a certain number of powers. Crush tourism, roughly speaking. Our task is to force the population of other countries to go to us to examine the sights, and their inhabitants, on the contrary, to keep at home.

On the top panel of resources, next to the religion, a new parameter appeared, equipped with an icon with a suitcase. This is tourism. The higher the corresponding numbers, the more likely it is to influence the neighbors. From the temptation to go for distant lands in order to stare at other people’s achievements, people holds a high level of our own culture – a familiar indicator, thanks to which we have long gone to delicious public institutions. The whole essence of the victory is to generate more tourism than other civilizations made cultural glasses.

A fresh look at culture gave rise to a completely unusual approach to some buildings. Previously, as it was: erected in the capital, say, the library, they received a bonus for science – and forgot about this building until the end of the game. Now everything is different.

In libraries, museums, opera theaters and inside some of the wonders of the world, special “slots” were started under the great creations of great people. From time to time, outstanding artists, writers and musicians appear in the country who can rivet masterpieces who increase our tourist “power”. It is not entirely clear, however, why sliced ​​geniuses are able to create only one work of art throughout their life.

By the way, if a cultural victory is not too interested in us, you can refuse novels, paintings and symphonies – each creator has the second “purpose”. So, the artist will be able to “launch” the Golden Age in the homeland, and the writer can be adapted to the creation of political documents that provide us with glasses of culture – the very one that was a culture even before it became the mainstream in Brave New World.

However, not only great personalities create the history of tourism. Simple archaeologists – a new type of “unit” – are also able to contribute to the prosperity of the nation. It is enough to send a hardworking seeker of treasures to a cell marked by the traces of our own greatness in the past – and museums will be replenished with new artifacts, and overseas guests will receive another reason to visit our country. However, if we are more concerned with protection from alien cultural influences, we can turn excavations into a landmark so that the local people see: we ourselves with a mustache, there is nothing to ride to our neighbors!

Finally, the construction of the wonders of the world is not in vain for culture: most of the unique buildings increase the level of tourism. People want to see Eiffel Tower and Parthenon. Even if both are – suddenly! – located in Morocco.

You can rob caravans again!

In the field of trading, the developers clearly decided to shake the antiquity. Caravans who first appeared is scary to think! – In the very first Civilization and disappeared from sight in the third part, suddenly returned. We are talking about specialized “units” capable of pave the trade route between two cities.

Surprisingly, the caravans laid the commercial route by land do not change their name until the very end of the game. Only on the initial phase there are camels on the map, and at the end – trucks.

Where and where to carry gold – we decide. You can exchange resources with cities-states. You can visit other civilizations, but it should be borne in mind that then, in addition to gold, the parties will receive a certain number of units of religion and science. This is not always profitable – if we are ahead of rivals in terms of technological development, we are unlikely to want to share the accumulated points of scientific progress with them.

Finally, no one stops to drive a caravan in their own territory. From a prosperous city – to a settlement where there is always a food, for example. The problem is that the number of trade routes is tightly limited. Initially, we can only have only one commercial route. Scientific discoveries and buildings increase the number of roads on which merchants can walk, but there is still no need to wait for abundance: nine trade routes are already great happiness.

Creations of great artists show us completely. From the works of literature, usually one line remains, from music – a couple of tactes. What kind of discrimination!

The inability to buy scarce goods in other cities is somewhat depressed. At least in the press version, merchants carry gold, food, units of production back and forth, help the spread of faith, but bring some citrus fruits to the city so that subjects are happy.

UN. Director version

Diplomacy also became somewhat more diplomatic. It is worth any of the civilizations to open the printed press and get acquainted with the full set of neighbors on the map, as the entire political elite rises and goes to the discoverer to visit-to the world congress. The universal collection of rulers makes fateful decisions: establishes a leading religion, introduces a “dry law”, prohibits nuclear weapons. In general, everything is like in the good old UN, only earlier, more, wider, more interesting. You can, for example, participate in the organization of the World Fair. Who will invest more in this event of production units – it will receive the most interesting bonus following the results of the project.

Naturally, part of the resolutions helps us, part – harms us. Therefore, it is so important to lobby for wise solutions and “fill up” unpleasant. The greater influence we use in the world, the more votes we have at every meeting. Relations with neighbors are largely dependent on the line of behavior in the Congress – the vote is open here, so all the rulers know very well who to beat the face for the embargo in case.

At the end of the game, the congress safely turns into the UN. Extraordinary meetings are added to ordinary meetings, where politicians choose a world leader.

By the way, spies that again appeared in our “bins” in Gods & Kings, are now capable of functioning as diplomats. Such experts can do a lot of interesting things – for example, buy the votes of other civilizations for the upcoming session of the Congress. Or to conduct ideological propaganda among the population of other countries, thereby strengthening our cultural influence on neighbors.

Half of the kingdom for the idea

It was not by chance that we mentioned ideological propaganda. Ideology was extracted from the system of public institutions and was put into three separate branches – freedom, autocracy and order. We have to choose one of these systems in order to, firstly, get the appropriate set of bonuses, and secondly, to find that the political doctrine, which we adhere to, indirectly affects both tourism, culture, and diplomacy. If we are building the state on the principles of freedom, and the Queen of Portugal decided to elect the order as a dominant idea, this can create some tension in our relationship. Moreover, a high cultural and tourist influence on the Portuguese can lead to the fact that they will begin to show discontent and want to change the ideology so that everything is as good as we have.

In addition to global innovations, which this time is really a lot, developers traditionally please fans with moderately fresh civilizations in the amount of nine pieces, well -forgotten and

re -revived world miracles, additional technologies and “units”. In particular, the “improved paratrooper” XCOM appeared in the list of military units of modern times – an unambiguous reference to the strategy of the same name, developed by the same Firaxis Games.

Of the two additional scenarios in the press version, there was only one one, dedicated to the Civil War in the United States,. Laconic and in fact, and in form, this mini-campaign acts as if a counterweight to the “peaceful” additions of the main gameplay. Here we will find a pure “war” with a tough time limit, originally set by cities and a very meager set of “units”. The goal is the capture of the enemy capital. In general, the standard opportunity to divert the soul for those lovers of a series who more like a fighting component of the game.

Civil War does not contribute to the development of culture. Only military technologies. Only hardcore.

Apparently from Brave New World it turns out a very high -quality addition. Even in the demonstration version, this addon opens several new ways of developing a formed civilization at once. The process is great, and the series continues to keep the brand, despite the repetition of some successful finds from the previous parts.
